Can You Get the Measles Vaccine While Preparing for Pregnancy or During Pregnancy?

Recently in Taiwan, the topic of the measles outbreak has been widely discussed.

This week in clinic, we also met many patients asking related questions, especially pregnant mothers.

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions recently.

First, it is important to clarify that the recent news is referring to measles, which is different from German measles, also known as Rubella.
In Taiwan, during the second prenatal checkup, around 12 weeks of pregnancy, tests are performed for hepatitis B, syphilis serology, and rubella antibodies.
If a pregnant woman unfortunately becomes infected with rubella during pregnancy, there is a risk of vertical transmission to the fetus. Infection within the first 10 weeks of pregnancy carries a higher risk of congenital defects, meaning it has teratogenic potential.
For measles, there is currently insufficient evidence showing teratogenicity, but it may increase the risk of preterm birth.

In Taiwan, the vaccine generally administered is the combined measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine, MMR.

However, this vaccine is a live attenuated vaccine, so it is not recommended for pregnant women.

For those preparing for pregnancy, if testing confirms that you do not have measles antibodies, you may consider receiving the vaccine first and then waiting at least 28 days before becoming pregnant. Another option is to receive the vaccine after delivery.

Because measles is highly contagious, in addition to washing hands frequently and wearing a mask, it is best to avoid going to high-risk areas as much as possible.
