The spindle is an important cellular structure formed during meiosis. Meiosis is the process that produces a single gamete(an egg or sperm)with the correct number of chromosomes. Therefore, damage to the spindle may result in embryos with abnormal chromosome numbers or may cause embryo development to stop.
According to Hung Tzu-Wen, an embryologist at Becoming Reproductive Center, the spindle inside an egg can be observed non-invasively using specialized microscopy( Spindle view ). In general, the spindle is located near the polar body(polar body), so during intracytoplasmic sperm injection(ICSI), the injection is usually performed away from the polar body. However, studies have found that in some cases, the spindle may be located in a different position.
Factors that may affect the spindle include: advanced maternal age, temperature, PH level, osmotic pressure, the process of removing cumulus cells(cumulus), and eggs after thawing.
In cases involving advanced maternal age, thawed eggs, or an extremely limited number of eggs, spindle observation( Spindle view ) may be used to help identify the spindle position before performing intracytoplasmic sperm injection(ICSI). This may help improve the chance of pregnancy and reduce the likelihood of abnormal embryo development.
