Is Excruciating Period Pain Normal?

Period pain with cold sweats that painkillers can't touch means see a doctor. Dysmenorrhea is primary (young women, no organic disease) or secondary (linked to endometriosis, adenomyosis and other conditions, with limited painkiller relief).

❤️‍🩹 Period pain that makes you break out in a cold sweat, that painkillers can't touch, that even keeps you from working — this is not "being too sensitive." It's time to see a doctor!

👨🏻‍⚕️ Did you know menstrual pain comes in two kinds — "primary" vs "secondary" dysmenorrhea?

🚩 Primary dysmenorrhea

  • Appears in young women, in the first few years after periods begin
  • No underlying organ pathology
  • Excess prostaglandin secretion → strong uterine contractions → menstrual pain
  • Especially painful in the 1–2 days around the period, but relieved by painkillers

⚠️ Secondary dysmenorrhea

  • Commonly starts and worsens around age 25–35 or even later
  • May involve a gynecologic pathology:
    • Endometriosis
    • Adenomyosis
    • Chronic pelvic inflammation or adhesions
  • Cause: organic disease irritates the uterus, causing adhesions and abnormal contractions → deep, persistent pain
  • Features: painkillers give limited relief, often accompanied by painful intercourse, painful bowel movements (anal pain), infertility and other symptoms

Which situations should prompt you to seek care? We'll share more next time~
