Will Ovulation Stimulation Injections Use Up Your Eggs Earlier?

Many women who are preparing for pregnancy have questions about whether ovulation stimulation injections will use up ovarian reserve earlier.

Yun-I has organized the following information to answer this question:

📌 A woman’s oogonia already exist in the ovaries during the embryonic stage. They are present from birth.

A newborn has approximately six million oogonia in both ovaries.

📌 At the beginning of each cycle in young women, about 20–40 antral follicles appear in the ovaries.

The stimulation from gonadotropins secreted by the pituitary gland is only enough to allow 1 to 2 of them to mature and ovulate.

The remaining antral follicles that do not receive enough stimulation will shrink and regress.

From puberty to menopause, ovulation lasts for about 40 years.

During this time, around 20,000 antral follicles are recruited into ovulatory cycles.

Most of the remaining ovarian reserve shrinks without ever being used.

📌 During treatment, ovulation stimulation injections, including high-dose FSH or LH, are used to help antral follicles that would not have received enough stimulation in that cycle grow and mature.

This allows more eggs to be retrieved and used.

This is a form of “resource recovery.”

It does not use up extra eggs, affect ovarian reserve, or cause menopause to come earlier.
